Brooklyn Is... celebrates the dynamic history of New York City’s most populous borough. The exhibition highlights a selection of photographs, maps, and ephemera from the Brooklyn Public Library’s vast collection to represent the stories and character of each neighborhood. Installed to mark the reopening of the Center for Brooklyn History, the presentation extended beyond the gallery and wrapped images along the building’s railing and filled its windowpanes, bringing the collections to the street.

As curatorial assistant, I helped shape a holistic portrait of the borough by selecting materials from both the Brooklyn Public Library and the former Brooklyn Historical Society (now the Center for Brooklyn History). Working collaboratively, the team divided Brooklyn into six regions, selecting key photographs and artifacts that reflected each area’s identity. Many of these images echoed themes found in the oral histories being recorded concurrently by the Center.
